SDGs Initiatives

The Tokyo International Film Festival will actively involve itself in SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) activities. Film is not only a medium for entertainment but also a medium for advocacy. We believe that there is much cinema can do. It has the power to transcend race, gender, language, and national borders. Such faith in the power of film will carry the festival as it commits to its SDGs activities.

SDGs[ Education ] Quality Education For All
Cinema is a medium that can make tangible the diverse values of this world. The Tokyo International Film Festival is a place where such diverse films gather from all over the world and aims to provide all audience members opportunities to enjoy such films in the best possible in-theater environments. With the exception of certain venues, the festival will also offer wheelchair-accessible seating in the theaters.

SDGs[ Gender ] Realizing Gender Equality
On March 8th, 2021, The Tokyo International Film Festival became the first Asian film festival to sign the Collectif 50/50 pledge to support Collectif 50/50’s international activities to promote gender equality in the global film industry. As of September 1st, women occupy 49 out of the 80 TIFF staff member positions. The festival achieved gender parity in the jury, with women occupying 3 out of 5 Competition jury member positions and 1 out of 3 Asian Future jury member positions, adding to 4 out of 8 jury positions.

SDGs[ Responsible Consumption and Production ] Responsibly Use, Responsibly Consume
The Tokyo International Film Festival has collaborated with PLASTICITY, a brand whose goal is to “become an obsolete brand in a decade.” PLASTICITY makes bags and cases from discarded plastic umbrellas and will produce and sell original TIFF-labeled multi-purpose cases.

SDGs[ Life on Land ] Protection of the Lush Life on Land
The Tokyo International Film Festival uses eco-friendly materials such as FSC-certified paper and vegetable-based ink for its posters, guides, official booklets, and other promotional material. Official festival goods and tote bags are also made from organic cotton.

SDGs[ Peace ] Peace and Justice for All
While there are countless conflicts, discriminations, and abuses worldwide, numerous films shed light on these harsh realities. By introducing these films and many others, the Tokyo International Film Festival aims to provide thought-provoking opportunities for audience members to gain insight into such issues.

SDGs[ Partnerships ] Achieve Goals through Partnerships
The Tokyo International Film Festival has been selected to become a member of the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) Festivals Committee. Effective as of September 2021, the position will help TIFF strengthen its ties with film festivals around the world. The festival also plans to strengthen partnerships with film companies in Japan to realize a more enriched world through film.
